The Inspector of Works (IOW) profession in Malaysia plays a vital role in ensuring quality, safety, and compliance at construction sites. Appointed to assist the Professional Architects or Engineers, an IOW is responsible for monitoring construction activities, verifying workmanship, and ensuring that works are carried out according to approved drawings, specifications, and regulatory standards.
IOWs act as the eyes and ears of the consultant on-site, regularly inspecting work progress, identifying non-conformities, and reporting issues that require professional attention. Their expertise spans multiple disciplines such as Architecture, Civil & Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical works, making them essential in maintaining high construction standards.
The profession is recognized by regulatory bodies such as the Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), which require IOWs to be registered under specific categories based on their qualifications and discipline. As Malaysia advances in infrastructure and development, the demand for skilled and certified IOWs continues to grow.
