SPEAKER BACKGROUND.
Technologist Mohd Shahrizan Bin Asmawi Bach. Eng. (Hons)Civil; MSc Civil Eng graduated from University Technology MARA Shah Alam in 2005 and University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in 2012. He is a registered Civil Engineer and Technologist with the Board of Engineers Malaysia and registered with Board of Technology Malaysia. He has almost 17 years of experience in the building and construction technology as Engineer and Instructor.
He served as Project Engineer and Site Engineer at Lavenda Building System Sdn Bhd and Binaan Cheras Sdn Bhd from 2005 to 2007. He is currently the Head of Department of Construction Engineering Technology (Building Forensic and Maintenance), DTF of Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Sri Gading., leading department meeting, organize and arrangement student and staff timetable, arrange development course for staff department, make sure materials for learning process is enough, organize for purchasing equipment’s, tools and materials to fulfil curriculum needs, organize workshop and laboratory material purchasing, leading and organize department to achieved Key Performance Index (KPI), organize student attendance and achievements record and leading for department consultation works.
During his years of service with Lavenda Building System Sdn Bhd and Binaan Cheras Sdn Bhd (2005-2007) and Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Sri Gading since 2007, he had the opportunity to undertake numerous projects related to design, construction, concrete testing, condition assessment, repair, rehabilitation, and maintenance of existing reinforced concrete structures both with the Government and the private sector. Apart from teaching, he also often receives offers from external stakeholder to carry out forensic investigation work on buildings especially those involving reinforced concrete structures.
Technologist Mohd Shahrizan was appointed by Malaysian Board of Technology as Panel Assessor for Professional Assessment and Panel for Program Accreditation under Building and Construction cluster. As an instructor of Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Sri Gading, he often gets offers in giving talks on reinforced concrete structures and the use of Non-Destructive Test (NDT) tools for building forensic works. He has successfully applied his skills and experience in giving lecture and hands-on to students, coaching his subordinates, entrepreneurs, and individuals from different sectors of the construction industry.
For conducting investigations there need to consider
the preparation of in-situ testing must be clearly established to minimize the
time, effort, and expenses. These include the choice of test method, the
extent, location of the test and the way of in which the result are handled.
In-situ testing of existing reinforced concrete structure is seldom cheap since
complex access arrangements are often necessary, and procedures may be
time-consuming.
Building inspection by visual testing is
probably the most important of all non-destructive tests. It can often provide
valuable information to the well-trained eye. Visual features may be related to
workmanship, structural serviceability, and material deterioration and it is
particularly important that the engineer is able to differentiate between the
various signs of distress which may be encountered.
Quality is related to the presence of those defects
and imperfections in the finished product which impair the performance
level. Many defects such as honeycomb,
concrete spalling, concrete crack, deflection and concrete delamination are
also generated during service. Knowledge
of these defects with a view to detect and evaluate them and then minimizing them
in product is essential to achieve acceptable level of quality. An improvement in the product quality
increases its reliability and in turns the safety of the structure. There is, therefore, a need to have methods
by which the defects can be examined without affecting their performance. In turn durability is also increasing to
withstand environmental deterioration.
