SYNOPSIS.

Soil, waste, and ventilation (SWV) as well as rainwater drainage system (RWDP) are part of the essential system of a modern building. In Malaysia, separate systems are provided for the collection and disposal of rainwater and sewage.

After centuries of use of ancient materials such as clay, iron and more recently steel, Ductile Iron and asbestos cement, uPVC has, in a comparatively short 30 over years, invaded all the traditional applications of these materials to become the premier pipe material, measured by length or value, in Malaysia today.

uPVC pipe applications fall into two broad categories primarily determined by the dominance of either internal pressure or external loading over design. They are referred to as ‘pressure’ or ‘non-pressure’ applications. This seminar covers introduction and improvements for non-pressure applications, as well as design strategies and considerations in site development. In Malaysia, drainage systems are currently designed to Malaysian Standards, which is the adapted version of British Standards, BS.

It is common in Malaysia that from time-to-time drainage system fail and caused flooding in the building structure and the damage of building properties. Apart from natural causes such as abnormal heavy rainfall, design and planning for such system can also influence the prevalence of catastrophe. Examples are drainage pipe under sizing and placement of drainage holes; lack of ventilation stacks; use of inappropriate class of pipes for heavy duty application.

For a site personnel as Site Supervisor, IOW, Engineers or any other supervision and monitoring parties do their work correctly and carefully, as rule of thumb they must understand the design, product or application, correct procedure of installation and how to inspect and identify failures. By understanding this, it enables them to advise or instruct certain works at site on how it must be done to prevent accident in short and long term.

SPEAKER BACKGROUND.

Chan Chin Seang, an Engineer cum Production Manager at Anson Exact Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd, since 2006. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of New South Wales, Sydney, and master’s degree in business administration from Victoria University, Melbourne. At present, his role in the company is to lead a products R&D team and oversee to whole manufacturing operation.

For his past 15 years in the local water industry, he has been actively involved in the design of SWV and RWDP systems for various construction projects, by providing engineering solutions to M&E consultants and Architects. Over the years, he was also invited by developers such as Eco World and Sunway to provide on-site training and seminar to their in-house engineers and plumbers.
